Night grillin’. 👩🏾‍🏭👨‍🏭 Freshly picked oysters from Denmark’s Limfjord Sound, grilled with a Tabasco-tarragon butter from @foodandwine. Check out the bubbles in the butter. They’re like 🔥🤤🙌🏾.

Ah! Today is #GivingTuesday, a day created to inspire people to give, collaborate and celebrate generosity. ❤️ I’ve been slowly compiling a list of local organizations that I’ve supported over the years, and thought today would be a good time to share a few. These organizations have low overhead (meaning no fancy offices or ridiculously high salaries) and do unbelievable work in the communities that they serve. I hope as you consider whether/where to donate, that you consider one of these!
.
1️⃣ Trampoline House (@trampolinhusetdk) is near and dear to my heart because I both donate to the organization and volunteer there every week. Trampoline House is a community center that works to integrate asylum seekers, refugees and immigrants into Danish society. (Denmark has some of the most aggressive anti-immigrant policies in Europe; and conditions have continued to get worse.) The center offers vocational training, language classes, legal counseling and lots more. It also depends heavily on donations so a little goes a long way!
.
2️⃣ Sea Sense (@seasense_ngo) is a grassroots organization in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania that works closely with coastal communities to conserve and protect endangered marine wildlife. Donations to their sea turtle conservation program pay for patrol teams (think turtle site protectors) and community development projects like school renovations and improvements to village dispensaries (small clinics).
.
3️⃣ The Sheldrick Wildlife Trust (@sheldricktrust) is much bigger than the other two organizations but still does incredible work. It was started in 1977 by Dr. Daphne Sheldrick in memory of her husband, a founding warden of Tsavo National Park in Kenya. The Trust has a number of activities including the Orphans’ Project which rescues, rehabilitates and reintegrates elephants and rhinos into Tsvao National Park.

How bad does the fermented herring surströmming actually smell? [Spoiler alert: Not great. Not great at all. 🙅🏽‍♀️] @freyaugust and I set out to tackle the notorious Swedish delicacy that’s considered to be one of the smelliest foods in the world. The results were... Interesting. 🤭 Stay tuned for the full sensory breakdown, and not to be missed video on @scandinaviastandard.
.
And a very special thank you to @ernstalbinblomma for the moral support, beautifully plated surströmming lunch and life-saving glass of aquavit!

Hi! My name is Jaughna and I’m the camera-shy writer and photographer behind <to what place>. I don’t think that I’ve ever introduced myself, so hello! And thanks for stopping by.
✨
I’m originally from the US Virgin Islands (by way of NYC) and currently live in Copenhagen, Denmark. Before you ask, love brought this Caribeña to the northernmost latitudes; the Danes know how to charm their way into your heart. 💕 Prior to Denmark, I lived in Peru, Tanzania and (briefly) South Africa. January will mark my 10th year living abroad.
✨
My background is in sexual and reproductive health, migration and gender; and I’m still very passionate about social justice in health. I “fell into” travel and food writing in-between jobs, as a way to keep busy after my 4th international move. That’s where <to what place> comes from, it was a passion project to document my experiences living and traveling abroad. Starting a blog, putting my name out, being on social media — these were all things that were (and are) outside my comfort zone. Fast forward to 2019, and I still can’t believe the journey that this little project has taken me on. I’ve had travel recommendations featured in the @guardian newspaper, told culinary stories with @scandinaviastandard, had a photo featured on @gadventures and won @saveurmag 2019 Best Culinary Travel Blog. 🥳🏆 There’s still so much that I want to accomplish; so many collaborations to pursue, so many stories that I want to share from home.
✨
So that’s me. 🙋🏽‍♀️ The lactose-intolerant, pizza-loving, social media-reluctant island girl behind <to what place>. Thank you for reading my story. I can’t wait to hear yours. 🙂

I was supposed to be eating healthy(ish) after a three-day culinary extravaganza with @saveurmag and @cincyexperience, but then I found the leftover candy stash from my Danish Junk Food Guide. The licorice survived. Everything else was annihilated. The healthy eating starts tomorrow... I think. 😉

I don’t know where to begin... It’s been a couple of days since I won the Readers’ and Editors’ Choice awards for Best Culinary Travel Blog from @saveurmag and honestly, it still doesn’t feel real. I’m so happy. So grateful. So honored to have been entrusted with these awards.
.
Three years ago I started this passion project to document my experiences living abroad. I was completely and utterly out of my comfort zone. I didn’t know where it was going. I didn’t know if it would be any good. Never, did I ever think that a magazine like SAVEUR would see, let alone recognize, my little travel blog.
.
Thank you to everyone who voted for me, rallied for me and encouraged me to keep moving forward. These words don’t adequately express my gratitude. I’m so fortunate to have your support.
.
Thank you again (and again!) to SAVEUR Magazine. It’s not just about the awards, it’s about the community that you’ve built and it’s indescribable to be apart of this group of culinary storytellers.
.
Thank you to Cincinnati for being a wonderful host. The people, the food, the architecture, the art! @Cincyexperience, you made us feel at home.
.
And to @twocupsflour @miakouppa @makeitdough @greencrabcafe @pickled_rose @kitchen.tessting @theflouredtable @_worldinapocket @ashortgirlsfeast @anisetozaatar @anna_s_table @omnivorescookbook @ful.filled @cupcakeree @littlefatboyfrankie and all the incredibly talented finalists, I can’t wait to see what you do next! Congrats to all the winners and enjoy the gorgeous @rookwoodpottery plates! 🥳 Look, Mom, I did it!
